Common questions

How often do you typically meet for sessions?

Depending on your identified need, our scheduling can be flexible. Typically, people meet with me once a week or every other week in order to maintain consistency, connection, and support. You are welcome to schedule out weekly sessions into the future or choose week by week.

What will a consult look like?

When you click on the "Book" button, it will bring you to my calendar. Here you can choose a 15-minute time slot for a video call. On the day of the call, I will share a little about myself and I will ask what you are looking for in therapy. I may ask some questions about your previous experiences in therapy, your current stage in your family journey, and what your main concerns are right now. This is a time for you to feel out what it would be like talking to me on a video call and decide if it's right for you.

What if I don't want to continue after a consult?

That is fine! The consult option is there for you to be able to make your best choice about the therapeutic fit. I am a professional and I will not be offended if you decide to not go through with beginning services with me. My priority is to connect people with the support that is right for them.

What's next after the consult?

If you decide to move forward with therapeutic services after the consult, I will email you a packet of intake paperwork. This will include an intake questionnaire, agreements and consent forms, and some standardized assessments. Once you have completed this, we will find a time to schedule an initial 50-minute session with me to discuss the information you've shared more in depth and create agreed upon goals. Once this assessment session is completed, we will start the therapeutic work together!

What does a session look like?

This will greatly depend on your identified needs and goals. Sessions usually begin with a general check in and then define a specific focus for the session, something that you can choose as your priority right now. Often, I provide a lot of in-the-moment regulation feedback during the session no matter what topic we are working on. This could be breath, movement, or other somatic intervention. If you are experiencing anxiety, depression, or other mood disorder, we will explore ways for you to reflect, regulate, and find support. If part of the work we are doing is processing a traumatic event, we will lay groundwork regulation strategies and safety before we begin to process the experience. If you are preparing for a birth, we can discuss and reflect on preparing for upcoming needs. I will often share my screen during sessions with resources and send them to you if you find them helpful.

Can my partner be involved?

Absolutely. While this is not couples therapy, your partner is the person who is closest to you in this experience. It is important for partners to understand perinatal mental health and your unique experience as well. As we begin the therapeutic relationship, we can explore whether it would be beneficial for your partner to be in session and how often or if it would be beneficial for them to have individual sessions as well. My fee is the same if your partner joins your session; I will not charge extra.

What if I need medication?

Sometimes medication is helpful or even necessary for comprehensive mental health support. I am not a prescriber, however if medication is something you are curious about, we can discuss referrals for that aspect of your treatment.

How will I know when I am done with therapy?

Everyone's therapeutic needs are different. Some people may need a few sessions to develop some skills and get some resources. Some people may need a few months to start feeling "like themselves" again. Some people may need a longer time to really process and reflect on hard things that have happened and feel ready to hold it in a healthy and constructive way. We will discuss what your hopes are for length of support and reassess as we do the work together.

Why do you only accept private pay?

As a licensed therapist with years of experience, I believe that I can offer the best services for people coming for support for perinatal mental health services outside of the insurance system. I am still under the regulations and guidance of the Minnesota Social Work Licensing Board and the Postpartum Support International Perinatal Mental Health Certification, so I have professional oversight and am held to ethical standards. By accepting private pay methods, I can provide the individual care and quality services that I see fit in my professional experience without far-removed insurance companies overriding it or dictating care.

How will I be billed for services?

You will receive an invoice after our session that is payable online via credit card or ACH bank transfer. The expectation is that a billed session is paid for before the next scheduled session.

Do you offer a sliding scale?

Yes! We can discuss this in a consult appointment.
